An unusual nineteenth century tooth in two ways. The subject matter is a domestic hen which we have not seen illustrated previously. Secondly is the manner of the engraving. The bird has been portioned up into segments by a series of stippled lines and the interior of each segment has then been infilled with engraved parallel lines, each segment running at a counter angle to those it joins. The lines have been coloured in red and black.

A well composed work that shows the artist has considered the design very carefully and executed it with skill and innovation.
