Arrives in Australia from Japan and far eastern Russia where it breeds in the northern summer. It is distributed widely across the eastern mainland of Australia and Tasmania from August through to February. Gould and his collectors and correspondents were unaware that it was a migratory bird from the Northern Hemisphere.
