Argentine penguinos or penguin jugs were used to serve wine from bulk casks and demijohns domestically and in the small "local" restaurants. Normally holding one litre. Popular in the 1920's and the 1930's they went out of use with the wine style "suave" in bottles becoming the wine of choice.  A somewhat revival periodically takes place, not for practical purposes as bulk vino de mesa is uncommon, but as a style affectation. The modern jugs are generally a glazed white.

Mottled brown glazed terracotta.

Height. 210 mm. (8 1/4 inches).
