Allom used illustrations from a variety of European artists to illustrate his "China, in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architecture, and Social Habits ...". Many of the engravings were pictures drawn by naval and military officers posted to Canton. Most authorities are of the opinion that Allom never visited China and that the work was commissioned in response to the intense interest the British public had in China in response to the First Opium War, 1839-1842.
