William Scoresby first went to sea with his father on a whaling voyage to the Arctic Seas aged 11. He returned to his schooling and combined his whaling career with an interest in science, particularly meteorology and magnetism. After the death of his wife he became a clergyman but combined his pastoral duties with his science. He became a fellow of the Royal Society.
In 1856 to further his research into terrestial magnetism, he embarked on a voyage to Australia and around the world in the iron-hulled ship ROYAL CHARTER.
Scoresby died in 1857 and this account of his voyage was published posthumously in 1859.
