H.M.S. VANGUARD was launched in 1835. She was the first of a class of eleven ships known as Symondite warships, built to the directions of the Marine Surveyor Sir William Symonds. Nominally 80 gun battleships, H.M.S. VANGUARD had 78 guns. She was the fastest ship in the British Mediterranean fleet but saw little actual warfare. She was not converted to steam and in 1867, was renamed H.M.S. AJAX.
The lithograph is a typical example of ship portraiture of the period. Printed prior to the ship's commissioning, it was available for sale at the commissioning ceremony.
