The Battle of Sluis was fought in 1602 with a small fleet of three Dutch war ships commandered by Vice-admiral Jacob van Duivenvoorde against a Spanish fleet of Meditterranean style galleys commandered by the Italian Admiral Frederico Spinola. This was a new form of naval warfare in the English channel and the Spanish fleet was decimated with many lives lost and all the galleys destroyed by ramming.
