First seperately issued chart of Apia Bay on the island of Upolu, Samoa. Samoa has three large islands and the two largest were part of British Western Samoa and the smaller island to the east,Tutuila and the port of Pago Pago was controlled by the USA. The town of Apia is the capital of the Republic of Samoa. The British gained influence after an arrangement between Captain Bethune of H.M.S. Conway allowed the British port access to Apia Bay. The American Navy Captain Charles Wilke, gained similiar access to Pago Pago at the same time.
