Chart of Timor: 'Essai sur la Geographie de l'Ile Timor.' Shows Timor and the surrounding nearby islands (Floris, Sabrao, Solor, Lomblem, Panter, Ombai and Wetter. With an inset map of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii). Published in the atlas accompanying the 'Voyage autour du monde sur les corvettes URANIE et la PHYSICIENNE pendant les annees 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820', Paris, which started being published in 1825. The expedition was led by Louis de Freycinet, who had proposed the voyage to the restored French King Louis XVIII. The purpose of the voyage was not exploration but scientific research. During the voyage, URANIE visited Timor on the outward and return voyages. Timor was the principle East Indies base for the French exploration voyages of the early nineteenth century.
